Bocce was played in the Roman Empire and developed into its present form in Italy. Today it is played around the world. Throwing balls toward a target is the oldest game known to mankind. As early as 5000 B.C. the Egyptians played a form of bocce with polished rocks. Bocce has come to flourish in the US which has more than 25,000,000 bocce enthusiasts. Next to soccer and golf, bocce is the third most participated sport in the world and is considered the oldest known sport in world history.
Here in Bonita Bay there are many leagues and open play for men and women. Several tournaments are played each season and they always attract a large number of enthusiastic fans. Matches are usually played at three Riverwalk Park courts, and there is another court at Spring Creek Park.
