League Challenge
On Saturday, March 16, 12 teams participated in the single elimination 2019 League Challenge. The games began at 12:00 noon and ended at 4:00 p.m. Anyone watching the tournament would have to agree that we have some very talented Bocce players in our club. Craib’s Crossing Guards (Cameron & Kathryn Craib & Tom & Eileen Covelli) earned First Place and Wachee Bocce (Lynne Michaud, Bob Faherty, Larry Brenner, & Mary Visconti) Second Place. The winners were each presented with a commemorative medal and the First Place winners also received a gift card.
Thank You to:
Morna Fournier, our Tournament Director and her helpers, for organizing the tournament.
Dave Williams, our Facilities Director and his helpers, for having the courts in great shape for play.
Mary Calabrese, our Social Director and her helpers, for organizing a great pizza party following the tournament.
And, our faithful referees: Max Selig, Jerry Hoerner, June Cousineau, Neil Albert, Bob Ross, Joe Calabrese, and Steve Jess who kept our games running smoothly.

Social Committee News
by Mary Calabrese
The recent League Challenge tournament stirred up the appetites of players and spectators alike who really seemed to enjoy the free pizza and caesar salad that was provided afterwards. Every last piece of pizza and blade of lettuce was eaten with gusto! Black Jack Pizza seemed to be the fan favorite. Special thanks go to Mary Ann Galluccio, Randi Newbery, and Anna Schwerer for their help in setting up, serving and clean-up. Many hands made light work.
A little rain (and threat of more!) did not deter the 70 hardy souls who showed up for this year's beach party on April 9th. The surf was definitely up but the partygoers stayed dry (mostly) as we listened to the mellow sounds of Johnny and the Ghost Riders. Heavy rains held off long enough for us to enjoy Haney's barbeque buffet which got got rave reviews. Special thanks go out to the Social Committee members who helped to make this event so special: Pat Gallagher, Jane Johnson, Randi Newbery, Cynthia Slack, and Jeanne Winiecki.

After President Diane Sweeney’s welcoming remarks and the introduction of league coordinators, each board director gave their report.
Membership Relations-Norman Manchevsky
Norman thanked the coordinators for their help in managing their leagues and responding promptly to questions and requests. The club has added over 50 new members and all who wanted to be part of a league have been accommodated. Norman emphasized the importance of keeping him informed of changes in coordinators and league rosters. He explained that the board has decided to eliminate the free name tag for new members due to workload and lack of name confirmation, and the website and welcome letter will direct new members to a supplier in Naples with pre-negotiated price and design. League times will remain the same next year with the 5th week open to the public. With plenty of open times, reservations can be made on the schedule posted on the message board. Norman will look into reserving electronically. Barb Kasdorf (#239-947-7773) will be taking evening court reservations beginning Nov. 1, 2019.
Membership Records -Norman Manchevsky
Norman reported for Bob Switzer. Wild Apricot has been very successfully implemented. More than 95% of the members have adapted to using it with a few insisting on paying by check. Wild Apricot has made it simpler for members and board members for events, payments, maintaining member information, emailing notifications and newsletters, handling responses, and having a good-looking website. Since coordinators do not have admin privileges, coordinators should let Norman know of changes in their league. Next season will be even smoother on membership renewals since we have cleaned up the member database, and we can start using other features of the software we haven’t implemented yet (such as the store).
Tournaments-Morna Fournier
Morna reported that all the tournaments were enjoyed by those who participated: Feb. 2- Battle of the Sexes, Feb. 15 & 16 Men’s Tournament, Feb. 26 & 27-Women’s Tournament, and March 16-League Challenge. Dave Williams agreed that the Men’s Tournament was successful. The League Challenge went smoothly with 12 teams (down from 15) and a single elimination. She allotted an hour for each game, starting at noon and ending with the pizza party. Some suggestions for the League Challenge next year would be to mix veteran members with new members and make it a community/league challenge. Morna announced that she is resigning from the board due to outside responsibilities.
Social Events- Mary Calabrese
Mary reported that this year the club supported 4 events: Nov. 2- Welcome Back Party “Hot Dog Cook-Out”, Jan. 23-Dinner Dance “Sock Hop”, March 16-League Challenge Pizza, and April 9-Beach Party “Surfs Up”. She mentioned that the Dinner Dance buffet did not get good feedback, but she would order pizza from Black Jack’s again. There are 70 registered for the Beach Party. Attendance at social events seems to be dropping from previous years. It was suggested that next year we have of a picnic at Estero Bay Park rather than the beach party.
Facilities-Dave Williams
Dave thanked the coordinators for educating their league members about grooming the courts as the courts are in great shape. He provided two hand-outs: “League Coordinators’ Responsibilities” and “Some Bocce Court Maintenance Tips”. Dave reminded everyone to make sure the club equipment is locked up: balls, paddles, and measuring tape. He is looking into a larger cabinet for next year so even the night balls can be locked up. Dave also reminded us to “Respect the Courts”. The rules for bocce are posted on the message board. A sign for ‘East’ and ‘West’ court was suggested. Dave and his crew were acknowledged for using the shop vacs on the courts after rains so tournaments could play.
Communication-Jim Marchessault
With Jim’s term ending, this month will be his last newsletter. He thanked everyone for their contributions to the newsletter.
Treasurer-Tom Covelli
Tom displayed a graph and pie chart of the Projected 2018-2019 Actuals. He explained that membership was budgeted at 600, but actually 583 paid. Tournaments, maintenance, social, and administrative costs were all under budget. Under admin costs are the coordinator’s luncheon, insurance policy, and filing fee. Wild Apricot, which has greatly enhanced club communications, membership records, and event registrations, was over budget; but that was due to costs being paid for two years. Tom reported a surplus of $5,000 for 2018-2019 that we can move to reserves and a $30,000 CD @ 2.75% for the restroom appeal.
BREAK FOR LUNCH
Other Reports
Survey-Tom Covelli
With the new Wild Apricot, we have the capability of putting together a survey. Tom will be heading the survey which will question our members on activities and various things. The suggestions from the coordinators will be incorporated into the survey. We will be offering some new events to promote new members and improve bocce skills.
Handicap Parking -Diane Sweeney
A proposal for widening the street in a section for 4 handicapped parking spaces is needed. The club will continue to work with pickleball on parking when either has large events at Riverwalk Park.
Restroom Project-Diane Sweeney
This is an opportune time to ask for a restroom for the community. Joe Calabrese explained that it costs $120,000 for one restroom and this will not be an easy sell to BBCA. We have 3 BBCA board members that support bocce, but the club will need to make a good presentation. Barb Kasdorf can provide info on public use of courts and photos of other neighboring community bocce courts with adjacent restrooms should be included in proposal. The club has been reserving $30,000 for this project to encourage BBCA. A meeting for the proposal will be Friday, April 5 at 9AM at the bocce courts. Coordinators volunteered to take petitions getting 24 or more signatures supporting restroom and to return them in provided stamped, addressed envelopes in two weeks.
ELECTION OF DIRECTORS
The nominating committee consisting of Norman Manchevsky, Diane Sweeney, and Dave Williams reviewed the two vacancies (Morna Fournier and Jim Marchessault) and presented the nominees: Ken Zegel and Dave Kozlowski. Ken, who loves bocce, was a school administrator and has computer skills. Dave, who volunteers on court maintenance, was an attorney with a financial background. Motion to elect Ken Zegel and Dave Kozlowski to fill these board vacancies was made by Neil Albert, seconded by Roger Stedronsky, and approved.
Meeting was adjourned at 1PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol Pytlarz, Secretary
